Hi J & D. Why is the nutrient mixture bad for the liver and kidneys? Does he receive some milk as well?
There are two other drips that also contain glucose, running at 1cc per hour each. That means the remaining volume (15cc) has to be made up somehow. The solution is TPN, a bag of yellow nutrients including salts, glucose, amino acids, and vitamins. This is dripped directly into his bloodstream through one of his lines. Since it isn't exactly the natural process of providing nutrients to the body, it can cause problems with the liver, including cholestasis due to gallstones. This isn't an immediate threat, but long-term use of TPN can cause problems. It's different with every child and not necessarily irreversible, but it's definitely better to switch to milk as soon as possible. They're not worried about these problems right now, especially not enough to risk the reflux that could be caused by too much milk. They plan on going to about half-feeds (12-13cc per hour) and holding stable until they can do the stomach valve surgery.
I have been reading your entries on a daily basis-and keep Drew in my daily prayers-as well as I've added him to the prayer book at our parish-St. Martha's in Murrieta. I am Erin Owen's mom-and knew Danielle when she was in high school. We are good friends with Kelly.
ReplyDeleteI have so many times thought about leaving a comment-with a prayer or a 'hug' via email. But, then I thought you might be 'bothered' by random people leaving notes...until I read your entry today about the anonymous entry-and how you do read the comments. So, I will wait no more...I want you both to know that I can't tell you how amazed I am at your strength and love-and that this child will forever be imprinted on so many hearts. Whatever God has planned for his life-know that he has had a reason to be here-he has touched hundreds of hearts-and we all hope and pray for his recovery. As an RN-your loving and descriptive stories of this beloved child has been so uplifting. You actually have taught me quite a bit. I will continue to hold all 3 of you in my prayers. Each Sunday when I distribute communion, I silently look at each parishioner and 'say' "please pray for Drew"...so many people stop and look at me as if they 'heard' me...I am sure they did. So, know that heaven is being inundated with prayers for this little guy. Thank you for sharing his remarkable life with so many of us...Love, Cathy Owens (school nurse at MVHS)
